Morning Sickness...Don't Let It Get You Down.

January 4, 2018

Morning sickness. It sucks. It wears you down. You feel like you should be grateful because it means you have a healthy and viable pregnancy. It is just a part of pregnancy, so you just cope. Well I am here to tell you that you don't have to. Awesome, right?

Morning sickness usually strikes around 6 weeks and hits it's peak around 10 weeks, until tapering off around 12-14 weeks. It can also hit ANY time of the day and last the entire duration of pregnancy.  I don't want you struggling like I did for the first half of two of my pregnancies, so...

I am about to share 10 super healthy food ideas to help nourish you AND fight morning sickness!

But first, here are 3 ways to eat to lessen the symptoms:

1. Eat small portions, more frequently. Eating small, frequent, meals rich in proteins and healthy fats throughout the day can help stabilize blood sugar and prevent morning sickness by keeping nausea and dizziness at bay.

2. Avoid hard to digest fatty, spicy or fried foods. This can trigger an upset stomach. Mix an upset stomach with morning sickness, you have a cocktail for some unpleasant times.

3. Eat nutrient dense food. When you eat nutrient dense foods, you get the most 'bang for your buck' and this is what you what when you experience morning sickness. This allows you to eat less while still getting the important nutrients.

Some of the best foods to help with morning sickness are Ginger, Lemon, Fruit, Crackers, Popsicles, Foods Rich In Vitamin B6, Bone Broth, High Protein Foods, and more...

And without further ado, here are 10 recipes to help you fight morning sickness:

 1. Ginger

*Ginger Lime Fruit Salad: This crisp, ultra-refreshing fruit salad is a perfect match for waffles, pancakes, or as a pairing for whole wheat crackers and chicken salad.

*Soft Ginger Cookies: Some pregnant people find that carbohydrates are easier to eat when suffering from morning sickness. The carbs mixed with ginger are a great way to treat morning sickness..

*Ginger Tea: Ginger tea can alleviate nausea and provide relief from morning sickness. You can drink it either hot or cold and it is so yummy!

2. Lemon

*Lemonade: Some women find that lemonade helps settle their stomach

*Hot Mint and Lemon Drink: Steep lemon rind and mint leaves in boiling water to coax flavor, then sip this simple, warming beverage to calm your tummy (and your stress levels)

*Lemon Water: Lemon supports the liver, which is the organ that helps to clear away excess hormones. Some practitioners believe that a sluggish liver may result in a buildup of pregnancy hormones, resulting in nausea.

 3. Bone Broth

*Homemade Bone Broth: Bone broth is pretty magical stuff. It contains minerals that act as “spark plugs” in our bodies, and it’s also rich in amino acids like glycine, which is needed to make bile. Mamas often find that sipping on homemade bone broth soothes their stomach and strengthens their digestion, making it easier to eat well.

*Bone Broth Oatmeal: Carbohydrates that are soluble and easily digestible such as oatmeal help to alleviate nausea because the bland morning staple assists in raising blood sugar levels at an appropriate rate.

 4. Popsicles

*Nausea Popsicle: Not only are popsicles a great treat, but they’re easy to make. You can also make them in bulk so you always have one on hand when nausea strikes. These cool pops are filled with nutrient-rich fruits and yogurt. Yogurt is a great source of calcium and it can help to neutralize stomach acids

 5. Vitamin B6

*Chocolate-Tahini Banana Bread: One medium banana supplies about 0.4 mg of B6. This recipe uses three, plus a generous topping of B6-rich sesame seeds. Enjoy this comforting quick bread as a snack or after-dinner indulgence.

Here are just 10 recipes to hopefully help you out. Obviously, results will vary. Let me know if you try any out and let me know how it helped!
